Full Measure The Gathering Summer 2024 NYC
Full Measure trip to NYC July 19-22 was a huge success!
We Had a lovely and entertaining dinner for Full Measure team members just off Time Square at the famous, Stardust Cafe, where the wait staff are Broadway entertainers, who sing for dinners, as the wait on tables.
Saturday was an immersive Harlem Renaissance experience. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Harlem Renaissance Exhibit was marvelous. And the Soul of Harlem Tour by our tour guide Larry was spectacular. The tour began with an elevated view of 125th Street (or “2, 5 as it is known to Harlem dwellers) from the Harlem train station platform. Larry gave us a history lesson on the beautiful murals inside the platform waiting area. We also met Farmer Dave of the spectacular agricultural initiative called “Harlem Grown” which uses land and hydroponic farming to supply Harlem residents with the know-how and produce from local neighborhood farming.
Then it was on to the Langston Hughes house, where a poetry workshop was in session. We were introduced to a marvelous poet, Shawn Creaative (https://www.facebook.com/share/v/4EycEAqbvtqLQzKD/) who recited his poetry for us right outside the house. And, Dr. Sylvia Rousseau, professor emeritus of USC stood on the steps of the house and Recited one of Langston Hughes's poems.
Larry gave us a tour of some of the most beautiful brownstones in NYC and explained the ingenious origin of brownstone “stoops”. Stoop is a Dutch word, and these elevated, ornate porches separated the houses’ entryways from the human sewage and deposits of horsedrawn carriages in the early streets of Harlem.
The tour moved to an elaborate mural of celebrities of Harlem painted on the wall of a popular restaurant, Corner Social. And, we met the artist/creator of the mural. of We visited the Jazz Museum, where I played the piano with Jazz Greats via a video simulation. And, last on our list was a visit to Harlem’s famous archive of Harlem life present and past the Schomberg.
Murray’s Seafood in Jefferson Park at FDR and 111th was our final stop for Saturday. The fish, shrimp, and lobster tails were, FIRE!
Sunday morning was spent in worship at the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church where our Austin, friend Rev. Kevin Johnson, mentored by Full Measure’s friend and colleague, Rev Joseph C. Parker, Jr. who pastors David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church recently became senior pastor. The worship was rich.
Several in our group, on different nights, went to see The Wiz on Broadway. Oh the singing, the dancing, the acting, the sets——Amazing! And, some in our group visited the thriving Bedsty and other spots in Brooklyn.
